Cortes Island's western coastlines face Quadra Island and the eastern shorelines is considered a major gateway into the vast ocean waters of Desolation Sound. Desolation is very well known for it's waterfalls, secretive coves, rock cliffs and tranquil natural beauty with plenty of opportunity for wildlife viewing including Bald Eagles and Bears. Most of the 1000 local residents who live on Cortes Island as permanent residences are located on the southern half of Cortes. Because of the fortunate location of Cortes Island being positioned under Vancouver Islands rain shadow the Gulf Islands, including Cortes, enjoy a drier climate. Many visitors come to Cortes Island to kayak, hike, bird watch, scuba dive, bike or to get away from it all and relax. Cortes has many natural outdoor activities to keep any visitor entertained like take a dip in Hague Lake only then to end up suntanning on the white, sandy beach. Or take a walk along the forested trails at Haig Lake Park spending a sunshine day walking. Some of the past comments say that a trip to the shores of Smelt Bay Provincial Park is a worth while adventure. |
