Matthews Point Regional Park

Matthews Point Regional Park Reserve is a sightseeing and picnicking park located on the south end of Galiano Island. Galiano Island is part of the Gulf Islands Group which are positioned off the west coast of British Columbia, Canada.

The park protects various eco systems and an important birding wildlife habitat area. The park was established in 1999 and measures 33 hectares. It enjoys some great far reaching marine views overlooking Active Pass and Mayne Island.

The highlights of the park include a 200 metre sandy beach, hiking trails and a day use picnic area. Matthews Point Park is an ideal spot for birdwatching and marine activity. Off the coastline one can watch boats, ferries and fishing vessels navigating Active Pass.

Birdwatching is enjoyed from many points in the park like the beach or on top of the moss covered rocky headland. Birding includes sightings of many sea birds and predator birds. There are over 130 different species of birds living on Galiano Island.

In the park are a selection of hiking trails exploring the coastline and the surrounding forests of arbutus, cedar and Garry Oak trees. One of the more popular walking trails is the hiking route connecting to a higher elevation park in the bluffs, aptly named, Bluffs Park.

How to Get to Matthews Point Park

Travel to the island of Galiano Island on the west coast of British Columbia, Canada. From the ferry terminal travel down Sturdies Bay Road. Continue traveling along Sturdies Bay Road and then turn onto Burrill Road. Continue on Burrill to the end and turn onto Bluff Rd. Follow Bluff Road to the park.
