Saltspring (Salt Spring) Island, Canada is the most popular destination of the Southern Gulf Islands. There are many reasons why Saltspring Island is so popular.

The island lifestyle is laid back, friendly and welcoming. The markets are unique and creative. The island is central to other Gulf Islands for touring. It is easily accessed via a ferry from Vancouver Island and the Vancouver BC mainland. And activities like boating, canoeing, sea kayaking, sailing, fishing, scuba diving and cycling are easily enjoyed when on the island.

Salt Spring is the largest of all the Southern Gulf Islands. The island roads are narrow leading to island parks, bays, forests, flowering gardens, artist galleries and art studios. There is a self guided studio tour on the island leading some of the home based art galleries on the island.

The services on Saltspring island important to travelers include gas stations, restaurants, coffee shops, gift shops, adventure companies, accommodations, tours, charters, banks, grocery store and internet. Most services are located in the village of Ganges.

Saltspring Island is 300 square kilometres (180 sq. mi.). There are some fantastic hiking and walking trails with summit views of the surrounding Gulf Islands, channels and coves. Some of the more popular island destinations are Ruckle Park and Mount Maxwell.

How to get to Saltspring Island, BC, Canada: There are 3 BC Ferry Terminals operating to and from Salt Spring taking people and vehicles to and from the other Gulf Islands, Vancouver mainland and to Vancouver Island BC.

From Crofton, Vancouver Island it is 25 min sailing time to Vesuvius on Salt Spring Island. Traveling by vehicle to the BC Ferries Terminals, Crofton is located 75 km (46 mi) north of Victoria BC on Hwy #1. The other route coming from Victoria docks in Fulford Harbour at the south end of Saltspring Island. This scenic 35 minute ocean cruise takes you from Sidney B.C. and the Swartz Bay Terminal to Saltspring Island, which is only 26 kilometres (16 mi.) drive north of Victoria, BC, Canada.

Arriving from Vancouver, British Columbia the city on the mainland, one can take the Tsawwassen Terminal to the Long Harbour Terminal on Salt Spring Island. Nanaimo is approximately 65 km (40 mi) north of Crofton-Vesuvius Ferry Terminal. There are also chartered float planes available leaving Ganges Harbour. People arrive in ocean kayaks, sailboats, and motor boats too. Well, what do you expect.. it is a beautiful island in the Pacific.
